Glossop North End
Workington
Sat 25 Nov 15:00 - The FA Trophy 17-18 Full time Attendance 368

Ends all even at Surrey Street

A good level performance failed to get the job done at the first attempt so a replay will sort out who goes into the Buildbase FA Trophy First Round proper.

No doubting the application, commitment, desire, attitude and fitness but a failure to score for the first time in ten outings means another fixture in an already crowded schedule.

Reds certainly shaded an entertaining encounter at a bitterly cold Surrey Street, but this tie is far from over and the Evo-Stik North outfit will feel justifiably confident about a Trophy run to match their recent Vase achievements.

The referee made an unusual decision with the game barely underway. Did a blue-shirted defender handle the ball inside the area? The man in black said not but, instead awarded Reds an indirect free kick inside the area, for obstruction apparently!

Nothing came of that opportunity nor the three chances that fell to Dav Symington in the first half. He was wide of the target with each of his attempts and Scott Allison sent another effort the wrong side of Paul Phillips’ upright.

But when North End’s joint manager was called upon in the first half, he thwarted Conor Tinnion twice with a crucial double save.

The hosts didn’t have a shot at goal until midway through the first half, then Chris Baguley took over centre stage. He saw a free kick go narrowly wide then forced Aaran Taylor into a couple of routine saves with shots from distance.

Reds moved up a gear on the restart but Phillips thwarted Symington, again, and Sam Joel while Glossop defender Mark Haslam almost got the breakthrough goal – an OG variety.

Allison missed a couple of chances late on and the lack of a clinical edge proved costly overall.

Josh Calvert was the pick of an excellent back four for Reds with Tinnion the outstanding player overall.

No two games are the same, so be prepared for more twists and turns in Tuesday’s second instalment.
