Reserves' season culminates with a victory

Reds brought down the curtain on their fourteenth season in the Lancashire League with a hollow victory over opposition who could only field ten players.

Lacking the passion and desire they displayed at Barnoldswick one week earlier, Reds were distinctly second best in the first half and trailed to a seventeenth minute goal.

Town were much more efficient with the ball and took the one decent opportunity which came their way. William Beckwith’s long through ball found Elliot Wilson and he shrugged off the last defender to slot the ball past Tom Fowler.

Workington couldn’t get going at all and repeatedly gave the ball away with discipline and decision making poor.

Thankfully, Reds improved sufficiently after the break to turn the game around and, as they say, a win’s a win!

Soon after the restart, Lamin Cham hit the sweetest of shots from fully thirty yards only for his left-foot effort to hit the crossbar. Macauley Sharp reacted quickly to the rebound but his weak header was easily caught by Town goalkeeper, Sam Arrowsmith.

But in their next attack, the home side restored parity. Lewis Jolly, who netted a stunning hat-trick in the previous outing, equalised with another fine strike from twenty-five yards, although the ‘keeper would have been disappointed with his attempt to keep the ball out.

That fifty-fifth minute leveller raised spirits and Reds dominated for the first time in the game.

Town came close to restoring the lead but Tom Fowler pulled off a point-blank save to thwart John Beckwith with the latter then blasting the rebound over the bar.

Reds pushed for the winner and it finally came ten minutes from time and well worked it was too. For once they took advantage of their extra manpower and quickly moved the ball across the eighteen-yard line with Sharp slipping the ball to Robbie Hebson (pictured) who confidently drove home the decider.

A seventh place finish for Reds, Barnoldswick a commendable third.
