Mossop hat-trick on home debut.
Reds recorded their third Lancashire League win of the season in an entertaining clash at Borough Park.
And it was a special home debut for Sheldon Mossop who netted a well-taken hat-trick with fellow teenagers, Reece Blake and Leo Holliday, joining him on the score sheet.
Sheldon, 18, score three eye-catching goals after 28, 57 and 88 minutes and might have netted more had it not been for the outstanding Cameron Allison, the Fylde ‘keeper denying him more glory with three excellent saves.
Sheldon’s clever assist had created an early opportunity for Tommy Whitehead but a bad bounce foiled him and he shot wide. Then a hooked volley from Holliday brought the first, of several, saves from Allison as Reds pushed for the early goal.
They had to wait until the twenty-eighth minute for the opener but it was rather special when it arrived. Holliday played the ball down the line to Mossop and, after ‘hurdling’ the last defender, he cut inside and placed the perfect shot into the far corner of the net.
Whitehead saw another attempt saved then created an opening for Blake, but the latter’s well-taken goal was ruled out as he had strayed offside.
But Blake got his goal five minutes before the interval when he netted the rebound after Allison had, once again, parried a Whitehead shot.
Reds went further ahead nine minutes into the second half with Holliday on target after two earlier efforts had been blocked.
And three minutes later, they bagged a fourth with Whitehead and Holliday combining well before Mossop finished with a clever shot on the turn.
For some reason, the hosts took the foot off the accelerator and Fylde scored twice in a fifteen-minute purple patch. Samuel Iwggbu appeared to be given too much room as he advanced on goal and he nonchalantly walked through before slotting the ball into the net after seventy-five minutes.
Jack Kay, earlier denied by a fine Tom Fowler save, reduced the deficit to two goals when he netted three minutes from time.
Fittingly, though, man-of-the-match Mossop had the final say with another well-taken goal after eighty-eight minutes, completing his threesome in the process.
