Below par Reserves lose out to Town

Without a Lancashire League fixture for over a month, the Reserves made a welcome return to action ...

... but were a disappointing second best in the home clash against Barnoldswick Town.

It was the classic ‘game of two halves’ with Reds playing well in the first, and just about deserving their interval lead, only for a dominant Barnoldswick to bounce back after the break, secure the points and record a league double in the process.

The fixture has been blessed with an abundance of goals recently but it was still 0-0 until the fortieth minute. Then a fine Matty Perry (inset) goal opened the scoring to give Reds the advantage at the break.

Perry won the ball in his own half and a fifty yard run took him deep into Town territory. He exchanged a quick one, two with Sheldon Mossop before finishing with aplomb.

Earlier, Mossop was denied by a fine save by the visitors ‘keeper and Tommy Whitehead had another attempt cleared off the line.

But Reds deteriorated rapidly in the second half and conceded the equaliser when Cole Hayman netted with a superb left foot shot. The Town substitute had a hand in all four goals as the Lancashire outfit romped to a deserved win, scoring another himself and having an involvement in the others netted by Gareth Hill and Bailey Coates.

Reds skipper Cam Carter survived with his reputation intact but the rest, unfortunately, were well below par despite the encouraging start to the game.

The Reserves will resume their league programme in January.
