Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 1 Eccleshill United 2

After being a goal behind Worsbrough seemed to have pulled themselves back into this game and then they were hit by a wonder goal that saw the points snatched away. Although Bridge were without Callum Westney and Adam Podmore through injury and illness, they fielded a side that looked strong enough with the inclusion of Danny Frost who is recovering from injury.

Down the slope in the first half Bridge made little impact on a strong United defence. Chances on goal were few and the ones that did come along were not taken. There was plenty of industry in midfield with Andy Broadbent and Liam Tinsley working well together and Frost showed his quality on occasions with some fine link up play. United used the pace of League top scorer Marcus Edwards and Andy Howland well and they managed to take the lead on 35 minutes. A shot from Howland hit the foot of the Worsbrough upright and midfielder Charlie Flaherty was the first to react as he tucked the ball away from the rebound.

In the second half Bridge played well and they were dominant in midfield, pressing the United back line and creating more in the way of goal scoring chances. Eccleshill in turn began to use the long ball down the hill for Edwards to chase. Bridge continued to pass the ball well but their play was not bringing the goal that they deserved and it was becoming frustrating as their opponents began to look more dangerous on the break.

Bridge finally equalized on 73 minutes after a shot from Scott Ruthven was parried by the United keeper on to his post. Substitute Shaun Pierrepoint was on hand to shove the ball into the net and level the scores. Bridge felt that this was no more than they deserved at this point and they set about going for the win that was now within their grasp.

They were rocked on 83 minutes when the lively Charlie Flaherty followed up a United attack and from 25 yards he hit an unstoppable shot that dipped into the top corner of James Jenkinsons goal. It was a goal worthy of winning any game and had it been hit by Wayne Rooney we would be watching replays for weeks!

Worsbrough played well and deserved at least a point from the game but sometimes things don’t go their way. We’ll play games when the performance isn’t as good and win.
