Final Game of the Season Away to Alnwick
Match Report
It was a cold and dull evening to play our final game of the season against Alnwick. With a planned 18:45 kick off, we made the decision to kick off slightly earlier as the weather was looking gloomy. The team talk from me was simple, “go out and enjoy the last game of the season, win, lose or draw, it has been a tremendous season and I was extremely proud of every player in the squad.
It was never going to be an easy game as Alnwick had a potential to secure three points in order to possibly gain promotion. The first five minute of the game was extremely tight, with Alnwick having a couple of chances to get behind our defence, but we made some great recovery tackles to prevent any real threat on the goal. As the game progressed we seemed to find a little bit rhythm but still not in our full flow of attacking football, again this was down to resolute defending, this time from the Alnwick team. It took us eleven minutes to register our first goal with a curled right foot shot from outside the area from Charlton; the Alnwick keeper was a little bit unlucky not to get a stronger hand on it as the ball passed over his head. I thought this would settle the team but it simply inspired Alnwick to try a little bit harder and they got their reward in the fifteenth minute when their forward was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded, this was struck firmly into the net despite the best efforts of Ponente. Following the penalty the game turned to become a battle in the midfield, both teams working hard to retain the ball and press. In the twenty first minute following some good football we were awarded a free kick just outside the Alnwick box. Charlton set the ball and calmly struck it over the keeper and into the back of the net. This time it did settle the team and we started to pass the ball round with a bit more positivity and in the twenty ninth minute Milner broke to the edge of the area and hit a peach of a shot which flew over the keeper to make it three one just before half time.
The second half started where the first half ended with another great strike from Milner in the thirty first minute to make it four one. Alnwick replied immediately following the restart and pulled a goal back in the thirty second minute. The game then returned to a battle within the midfield and with both teams creating chances at either end. This battle continued until the fifty fifth minute when Alnwick scored to make it four three. The momentum was with Alnwick and they broke through again in the fifty ninth minute to level the game. From the kick off the referee blew the final whistle and that brought to a close an excellent game and the end of our first eleven-a-side league season.
On reflection I would say a draw was a fair result we played some good football at times but we also switched off at times and Alnwick punished us for some of those mistakes. Not sure if things may have been different if Dinsley and Charlton had been able to play in the second half, but with Dinsley feeling unwell and Charlton taking a bad knock to his ankle it was not worth risking either of them to return to the pitch.
Man of the match was really close; Alnwick awarded it to Moyes-Mukhtar with Milner running a very very close second.
As a team we win, lose and draw together and I have to say I am very proud of every single player for their performances this season. The “champagne” experience after the game was excellent for the lads and thanks to Gloria for providing the fizzy. Thanks also to Tony for running the line; again this is very much appreciated as it allows me to focus on the game. Final thanks to Tracy & Gloria again for providing the hot refreshments on the line, how I only got one cup throughout the whole game I will never know, did they not see me standing there in my “shorts”!!
Final Thought:
Although Thompson was not at the game the lads & parents wish him well with his continuing recovery and can’t wait to see him back training and preparing for next season in the first division.
Champione, Champione, Are We, Are We, Are We!!

Ronald burge - 1 year agoCongratulations Sam and the boys from all members of our club thoroughly well deserved. Make sure the silverware gets engraved and its a credit to all the hard work you've put in, might need a chat to pick the brains of a winning coach while we have one. Well done again.
