The Glitz and the Glamour definitely returned to Wythenshawe on Sunday 7th October, exactly 50 years to THE very day the doors opened at the now legendary and Wythenshawe's VERY own Golden Garter Night Club and Restaurant.
With a fantastic gathering of ex employees, regular artistes and "Garteriers" (regular Garter visitors) from the heady days of Manchester's answer to the swinging London variety scene, the Wythenshawe Cricket & Sports Club in Northenden, played excellent host as the hours, days, months and years just rolled away to the sound of great music, comedy and lots of stories retelling the glory days (and some not so glory days) everyone sharing stories of the antics of the BIG stars of the day that the "Garter" used to regularly have on it's glittering bill.
With information, photos, menus, lists of acts who had played at the club, dotted around the room, there was a real nostalgic buzz in the air and it was clear to see that the Golden Garter had been an amazing place to work and everyone was proud to have been a part of it's illustrious history.
So much hard work had gone into the detailed organisation of the day by John Orchard, the pianist of the famous "Shep's Banjo Boys", which included the world premiere of his 50th Anniversary film, with video clips from many famous names who had been involved or played there over the 15 years it was open.
We were honoured at the Cricket Club, to host and to now be a tiny part of the history of a place which still holds so many wonderful memories from Wythenshawe's glittering past.
Well done to everyone involved with the event and who were able to support on the day.
All roads to Manchester REALLY did lead to The Golden Garter in little old Wythenshawe!!
