2nd XI Match Report
Wythenshawe win in last over drama...
On a day where the weather threatened to spoil both games of cricket for Wythenshawe, the avid local supporters were treated to a real tight game of cricket which saw Wythenshawe nip it in the last over...
After loosing the toss, Gavin Plowman and his opening partner Ian Jones made a confident and lightning start. Gavin clipped one behind which brought aussie vice-captain Ben Taylor to the wicket. He and Ian looked a million dollars and started to settle in........then disaster!!! In consecutive balls Ian and Ben both holed out to limp balls to give their wickets away... Just when both guys looked set!!!! Things went from bad to worse when Michael Pearson and the destructive Ryan Burgess both went cheaply too! A real opportunity missed for the big hitting middle order batsmen. With the side 85 for 6 after just 20-odd overs the crowd were getting disgruntled...
With Man City's top four place at stake against Everton, the crowd filtered away to see what they thought would be a better watch,,... how wrong they would be...
Upon returning to the club, the upset City faithful were over the moon to find a very respectful 185 had been posted. GAME ON. Upon investigation it seemed young talents Craig Stone and Nathan Bailey had piled on the runs. Craig had an impressive 60-odd, and Nathan followed up his good start to the season with a handy 38. So the rumour is true 'Stoney can actually bosh it!!'
Winton made a rocky start to their chase losing 2 quick wickets. But after an unconvincing start Winton steadied the ship to chip away at Wythenshawe’s total! Ben Taylor will be the first to admit he didn't bowl his best, and with a number of loose deliveries let Winton back into it! The game was crying out for someone to take the pace off the ball, and on came mini-man 'Vaughan Corrie'. With his Lancashire Lightning hat making him immediately identifiable, he made his mark on the game. The 'little leg spinner' tightened the ship and the game was hotting up for a close finish. With a couple more wickets falling it was really getting close. It was left to Ryan Burgess to bowl the last over with the away side needing just 10... The pressure was really on and it got too much for Winton, with a couple of risky shots and dodgy running, Wythenshawe held their nerve to close out the match.
A really good win for the boys and one which will give much confidence to the team and for the rest of the season...
Well done Gav and Ben, keep up the good work!
