Yardley 2 Lichfield B 3

As always when we play Lichfield another game of hockey played in the correct spirit. Both teams were small but Lichfield had 4 adults all outfield players to our 2 (Anthony in goal and Nigel). Lichfield started the game much the brighter of the two teams attacking from the first whistle. A couple of short corners later and 1-0 Lichfield when the ball broke into the D, we had chances to clear but couldn’t quite get it away to safety. Very nicely finished by Lichfield. Just before half time another shot from Lichfield canoned off the post with Anthony well beaten, lucky for Yardley and a wake up call. 1-0 at half time and Yardley were strangely subdued with barely an attack to talk of. A couple of minor adjustments and rousing half time talk later, we were under way again, the captain led form the rear (having given up his umpiring duties as it was too cold). 2-0 Lichfield with a right old mess at the back and suddenly things were looking grim. Jeevan to the rescue as suddenly galvanised into life it became all one way traffic as Yardley attacked. The ball started to be passed around particularly through the middle and Jeevan finished off the first of two goals with a shot beating the keeper to his left. Lichield were struggling but were awarded a short corner and another scramble, not cleared and 3-1. Sheer persistance (well alright a little skill as well) produced Jeevans and Yardley’s second from close range. The pressure was on but time was against Yardley and ran out with Yardley finishing the stronger. It should be noted quite how young a team was fielded by Yardley. Kathryn, Owen, Mohammed all 10. Jordan 11, Grace, Alex Pradeep Hashim 12. Jeevan 14, Attaur 15, Anthony a little older, then a half centurion (Nigel, terrible when your age is higher than your top cricket score)!
All in all Lichfield deserved the win but Yardley showed good spirit in making a real fight of it. For some players, it was an opportunity to see the pitch in a different light, (read between the lines and I think this means the captain lined the team up wrong) and try different positions. A first game for Mohammed well done.
