match report by John Rawson
Yarnbury 33- 21 Old Grovians – Yorkshire 2 League
Yarnbury faced local opposition for the penultimate league game of the season following on from the annual veteran’s tournament where ‘The Blue’s and Royals were the annual attraction. The only backs change was George Oldridge back at full back and John Bateson started on the right wing for the injured Graham Maycock.Paul Kernick came back in to the second row for injured Ian Maycock.
Yarnbury had a promising attack stopped for not releasing on the ground after good runs from James Falgate ,prop Dan Penman and back row Martin Rainey but the moves came to nothing and Grovians were making good ground by running the ball at every occasion as they needed a point to secure their survival in this division. However,Yarnbury showed them how to do it following a pass back into their own 22 and stand off Danny Pound decided to run the ball out of defence and quick ball from Captain Jason Avison and his co – centre James White got the ball away and back inside cut the Grovians defence and hooker Tom Whitfield followed up to score the opening try.Pound converting to put the visitors on their place. Grovians lost their hooker Matthew Worall to a yellow card for persistent killing of the ball on the ground and then worked the ball well out wide to create an overlap for winger Tom Stearn to score in the corner.Ben Brown missing the conversion.
Grovians took the lead with a penalty on 27 minutes by Brown after persistent penalties against the home side was effecting their superiority.
Yarnbury persisted in running the ball and right wing Josh Bateson showed his pace before being tackled short of the line. However, shortly after Yarnbury stole a ball in the tackle wrong footing the grovians defence and James White did the necessary showing and going under the posts Pound converting to put the home side in front but persistent penalties allowed Brown to close the gap with another penalty.Half Time 14-11 .
Yarnbury begun to step up the pressure and from close in James Cryan took the ball from a ruck to score and Pound converted well from out wide .To the credit of the away side they were impressive in the scrum and had a plan to try and score tries as they really needed to get something out of the game. They managed to get left wing Mark Harwood over to reduce the arrears, only for Yarnbury to get winger Josh Bateson in at the corner following full back George Oldridge coming into the line to make the overlap.Pound converting and the game was made secure on 70 minutes with a slick blindside move started deep in Yarnbury territory getting winger Bateson away in his own 22 metre area on the blind side who easily beat his opposite number on the outside whilst doing the same to the full back to get Yarnbury their fifth try and the bonus point win.Grovians never gave in and scored a consolation try from winger Mark Harwood in the final minutes.
Yarnbury have the chance to finish in third place next weekend at home to Leodiensians in the final game of the season.
