Yarnbury travelled to Harrogate for the first time in around 2-3 seasons in hope of finally hitting top form for the first time this season. The pitch was very boggy underfoot but didn’t cause too many problems during the game. Yarnbury started to strongest with their forwards getting on top of rucks and mauls. Eventually after constant pressure Yarnbury were awarded a penalty and the decision was to go for goal, Jack Malthouse converted and it was a well deserved 3-0 lead to Yarnbury after 15 minutes. Yarnbury kept on going and the forwards never stopped working and Yarnbury found themselves in a great position in the game. Then a freak break through the middle for Yarnbury and keeping the ball alive the ball finally found itself in the hands of Mark Hodgson who rounded the full back to go under the posts. We won’t mention the kick. 8-0 Yarnbury lead and it ended that way in the first half with Yarnbury right on top.
The second half was Harrogate’s and with some outrageous, disgraceful, refereeing decisions, Yarnbury were left defending most of the game and then pressure from numerous penalties took its toll when they crashed over from close range. Yarnbury hit back though and a terrific crash ball, an outstanding run by Mark Hodgson to then score in the corner got Yarnbury into a 13-7 lead with ten minutes to go. Yet again though the referee came out with some awful decisions and Yarnbury were left defending, Yarnbury won the ball back until once again for reasons unknown were penalised again and then Harrogate got over again and converted to win 14-13.
It was a terrific effort to what rewards Yarnbury got none thanks to what could be described as shocking refereeing performances.
