match report by John Rawson
Yarnbury Hornets 18- Sheffield Tigers 2nds 33 – Yorkshire Merit Premiership League
Yarnbury 1st Team had a free Saturday after Leos could not field a team for the Yorkshire Vase Cup weekend of fixtures so the highlight was Yarnbury Hornets against the league leaders at home in their Merit League.
Yarnbury defended ferociously against a strong National League second team who were much bigger and stronger particularly in the first half up the slope. The scrummage was a none contest against a big pack but Yarnbury stook to their task and allowed Sheffield only two tries in the first half and managed a penalty before the break with a close in Danny Pound conversion. The backs managed some good breaks down the left side with returning centre Tom O’Brien making good yarnds on several occasions.
The second half saw tries from winger Josh Batson and a converted try from Tom O’Brien.Danny Pound tucking the conversion and a penalty getting the score back to 17-18 but Sheffield were too strong and finally denied The Hornets a loosing bonus point.
Yarnbury travel to Ripon in their next Yorkshire 2 league match next Saturday.
