Champions Yateley on the up
April 08, 2009
Yateley Hockey Club’s men’s 1st XI clinched the Hampshire League Division One title last Saturday at Frogmore Community College, thanks to a 5-3 victory over their Blandford counterparts.
Yateley have been the league pacesetters for much of the season and a month ago looked to be sauntering to the title. But defeat to closest rivals Southampton University and then Wimborne Wayfarers meant that it all got a little too close for comfort at the top of the table.
Victory in the derby over Aldershot & Farnham ten days ago left Yateley level on points with Southampton and guaranteed them promotion to Surrey/Hampshire Division Two next season.
But, with the students boasting a far superior goal difference, Yatelye needed at least a draw on Saturday against Blandford to guarantee the title and with it promotion to Surrey/Hampshire Division 1 (the league is being restructured for season 2009/10).
They got what they needed, in style, winning 5-3, and sparking wild celebrations among the team, led by captain Paul Bockett-Pugh.
Yateley ended the season with an impressive record of 17 wins from 20 games, scoring 85 goals and conceding just 28 (nine of which came three weeks ago against Southampton) on their way to 51 points.
