Thornbury Town 0-1 Yate Town
Yate take victory at Mundy Fields
Yate got into gear early and showed good promise as George Box rode a couple of tackles around the area before pulling an effort wide. From a home attack, a defensive header from Charlie Hitchings sat up, the shot came in and was blocked a few yards out.
Joe Swift intercepted in midfield to thread a pass outside of the left back to Box, who skipped forward and calmly slotted home for 0-1. Mayson Evans covered a lot of ground up and down the right flank, and the midfield were getting in some biting challenges but whilst Yate's approach play was good, they became too eager too early and scuffed and snatched at shots. Jack Ball got on the end of a swinging Ciaran Greening cross but saw his header sail over.
After wholesale changes, Ben Brooks took a fine touch and crossed for Luke Bryan to head off target before the away side stepped up the pressure and started to overrun the Thornbury defence, with just the killer ball missing in the final third. The hosts dug in to their credit and almost fashioned a leveller from an attack down their left, but as the ball was fed in, the effort was pulled wide.
At the end, Yate could reflect on having assembled a much more solid squad than this time last year, retaining important players from the last campaign, and adding to the ranks with the signing of some good new and familiar faces.
