Bishops Cleeve v Yate Town MATCH REPORT

10 months ago By Sebastian Parker

Unbeaten in six, Yate continue their fine form.

On a heavy but bobbly surface, Bishops Cleeve made a quick start attacking down the right through the lively Romayne Thomas, whose cross found the head of Ieuan Cross and brought a superb, point blank reaction save from Harvey Rivers, who pushed the ball onto the bar and then to safety. For Yate, a Kyle Tooze surge on the left forced Sam Gilder in the home goal to save with his feet at the near post, before Steve Davies' flicked header was handled on the line on 13 minutes. A yellow card and a spot-kick later and Davies gave the visitors the lead, clinically despatching the penalty into the bottom corner.

Yate went for the jugular. Davies seized on a defensive slip to feed Ben Brooks who, off balance, made Gilder push the ball away, and the home goal was peppered with efforts on target for a period. On 25 minutes, Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist was strong in the challenge to slip a pass into the right channel and Davies expertly slotted the ball home for 0-2.

The Mitres fashioned some half-chances and efforts on target without seriously threatening. Yate seemed capable of a counter with the combined pace of Davies, Tooze, Brooks and Leigh-Gilchrist, and Nick Peare worked a very good shift on his debut in midfield, and looks a great addition to the squad.

HT 0-2

Within moments of the restart, the away side should've settled the result, as the strikers queued up but let a great chance go begging. The hosts raised their game, became more committed and strengthened in defence. They were unfortunate to see an effort cleared off the line before Yate wasted a golden opportunity. Three players attacked onto a long punt that cleared the last defender, but seemed unsure who was best placed, and Leigh-Gilchrist disappointingly scuffed his shot.

Cleeve still battled well and strive for a way back into the match. Rivers, possibly unsighted, had to get down sharply to turn away a fine shot destined for the corner, before Davies twice had chances to claim the match ball. First, latching onto a loose clearance, he pulled his effort agonisingly wide and then called Gilder into action one last time to block his drive.
