Cribbs FC 2-4 Yate Town
Quality strikes see Yate safely through to GFA U18 Shield Final
From an early attack on Yate’s left, Dylan Evans collected a return pass to let fly from 25 yards and see his sweet left-foot strike rifle into the top right corner to open the scoring. The equaliser soon came for the home side, after Ewan McMillan’s unfortunate slip in the 6 yard box, allowing the Cribbs striker to pounce and drag a shot across Mason Hawkins in goal and just inside the far post.
The hosts were lifted by this, began to press harder, and Yate began to get a little anxious and unable to settle. A second goal almost came from Luke Henderson’s overhead hook, but the home keeper pulled off a fine flying save and as another move broke down, Cribbs broke away and were suddenly two on one. Fortunately, a combination of defensive blocks saw the ball squirm inches wide of the post. The home side were keeping a good shape and closing down well. The visitors needed to keep possession, keep playing and all being well, the quality would come through.
A lovely, sweeping move put Yate in front again. Dan Dempsey flicked the ball inside to Sam Knight, then joined the attack. Knight fed Henderson on the right, and his cut-back to the edge of the box picked out Dempsey, who took a touch before tucking the ball neatly out of the keeper’s reach into the bottom corner. 1-2
Joe Shutt came off the bench to add even more pace and delivery in the front line, and his corner was met by Henderson’s downward header at the far post to give the away side the two-goal cushion that was needed to calm things. Shortly after, Shutt picked up a pass outside of the box, skipped inside and out of tackles and lashed the ball fiercely in off the far post for 1-4.
In the closing minutes, Yate switched off to a quickly taken free-kick, and Hawkins was well beaten by an excellent curling shot from just inside the area, to restore a glimmer of hope for the home side, but no more scoring followed.
After a more fluent second half, Yate can now look forward to the U18 Shield Final at GFA HQ, Oaklands Park, Almondsbury on Thursday 3rd May
