U18s shot out of the GFA Shield (Cribbs win 3-2 on penalties)
Cribbs defeat Yate in spot-kick shootout after goalless stalemate
The first ten minutes consisted of fierce home pressure, with the game played at a frantic pace. Yate then settled and forced a series of goalbound efforts on the Cribbs goal, without profit. A neat 1-2 between Justin Hall and George Holland ended with Holland’s rising drive sailing beyond the upright, and Reon Dawes flicked just wide after bursting into the left channel.
The hosts attacked through their right channel and the resultant low shot flashed wide of the far post before defensive carelessness from the visitors presented the home striker with a 1-on-1 aginst Mason Hawkins, who blocked well.
Yate were frustrated, conceding possession too often, but as the half progressed the hosts were creating the better opportunities.
Cribbs again started quickly after the break, forcing Hawkins into action early on. Yate were suffering from defensive lapses and became more and more anxious as they lost any real creativity through midfield into attack.
As the game went on, the home side looked more likely to open the scoring and only a flying save from Hawkins late on took the contest straight into a penalty shoot-out after 90 goalless minutes.
Penalties – Dawes and Ellis Kow both succeeded from the spot, with the Cribbs keeper pulling off two good saves. One effort from the home side was skied, but the other kicks were all netted, leaving Yate needing to score to force Cribbs to have to take their fifth spot-kick. The home keeper again went full length to parry the pen away, Cribbs had out-shot Yate and progress to the quarter-finals.
