Hurricanes at their Sunday best!
The Hurricanes won their third victory of the season at Tavistock Reds this morning, this despite the extremely wet conditions that challenged both sides during the course of the game.
The match was originally scheduled to take place back in April, however the persistent heavy rain at the time forced the postponement of this fixture. The situation did not look much better this time around, as no less than five stoppages for rain throughout the course of the game meant that both teams found it hard to adjust to the conditions.
Despite losing the toss for a third time this season and being asked to bat, it was the Hurricanes who adapted most quickly to the elements, with the opening pair of Jonathan Hawley (21) and Will Ingram setting the pace with an opening stand of 30 runs for the first four overs.
Tavistock paceman Hunter Strand (1-18) soon struck back for the home side, however, as the second pairing of Ben Charlton and Lewi Stokes were pressured into a number of defensive strokes to limit the score to 247 at the halfway stage of the innings.
Strand again got in on the act with a well aimed shy at the stumps in the 10th over to run out Lachlan Fulton (9), however not to be outdone, he deftly struck three well timed blows to the boundary later to advance the score with partner Sudhan Sudhakar to 269.
Both Alex Smith (8) and Jack Smyly (15) recognised the need to push on in the final four overs and both players duely wrestled back the initiative for the Hurricanes with a succession of boundaries at the end to leave the side with a competitive total of 300 runs.
As conditions deteriorated, the Reds opening pair responded in thoughtful fashion, as a series of well timed shots and some initially wayward bowling by the Hurricanes gifted some early runs to the home side. Some quick intervention behind the stumps by Lewi Stokes checked their progress, however, as he removed the bails to run out one of the batsmen.
This seemed to give the Hurricanes some momentum, as encouraged by the fall of this first wicket, Lewi was again in the thick of the action with a very smart catch off Alex Smith's (3-18) bowling. Lachlan Fulton (1-12) and Jonathan Hawley (1-6) then picked up wickets as the Reds reply began to stutter, this despite them being very much in the game at the halfway stage. A diving catch and final wicket for Jack Smyly (1-15) soon extinguished any hopes of a grand finale to the game, just as the rain started to heavily fall again.
Both wicketkeepers were nominated as their sides respective 'Fielder of the Match', in Lewi's case due to his catches and run out despite the terrible conditions. The Hurricanes will hope that the weather improves for their next fixture against Whitchurch in three days time.
