The best way to keep up to date with York Acorn RLFC

Katie Rough tribute matches at Acorn

1 year ago By Acorn Admin

HUNDREDS of people gathered at a special charity rugby match on Saturday, to pay tribute to Katie Rough.

York Acorn RLC organised the match against Skirlaugh on Saturday, to raise money for Katie’s family.
It was played following an under 9s game - the closest group to Katie’s age - between Acorn and Heworth. Organisers say at least 250 went along and supported the two matches.
Rugby chair Dave Harrington said: “It was absolutely brilliant, the weather was fantastic and we took more than £700 on the gate alone.
“The family came along and we presented Katie’s mum with flowers before the match and we held a moment’s silence before kick-off, which was impeccably observed.
“On behalf of the club we offered our sincere condolences, and said if there’s anything we can do in the future they know where we are - we are a community club.”
The match between Skirlaugh and York Acorns saw the team wear special “Team Rough” shirts, and York won 34-10.
The match was followed by a raffle, while Heworth’s under 9s team - who played earlier in the afternoon - did their bit by helping out with collection buckets.
In total the event raised £1700.
Seven-year-old Katie Rough was found with serious injuries in a field off Alness Drive, Woodthorpe, on January 9, and was later pronounced dead in York Hospital.
Her funeral will take place at York Minster on Monday, February 13, at 1.30pm.
Her family have requested family flowers only and would like people to wear traditional / formal wear with a splash of colour, for example, bright ties, bows and scarves.
A collection will be held for the charity SMIRA (Selective Mutism Information and Research Association), which supports families and health and education professionals involved in the upbringing of selectively mute children.
