Acorn hang on for gritty win
Acorn had to do it tough to clinch their third consecutive league victory with a one point success at Castleford Lock Lane on Friday night.
Acorn started brightly and had all the early pressure having a try chalked off as early as the third minute for a forward pass. Steve Mackley though got Acorn on the board on 17 minutes when he intercepted a speculative Lock Lane pass to race 60 yards for the opening score, Anthony Chilton goaled for 6 -0 lead.On 24 minutes an Adam Sellars off load created the gap for Leigh Rientoul to gallop 70 yards for an excellent try, Chilton goaled and Acorn looked good at 12-0. Chilton stretched the lead with a penalty on 27 minutes for 14-0
Lock Lane were getting back in the game with some silly Acorn penalties and this was rewarded on 39 minutes when Steve Balderson went over from close range Wayne Hardy goaled to leave the half time score at 14-6.
Lock Lane took this momentum into the second period and winger Adam Garlick crossed in the corner to get the hosts back in the game at 14-10, after 49 minutes.
It was backs to the wall stuff for the next 20 minutes as Lock Lane threw everything into attack Acorn's defence held firm though. Acorn gained some much needed respite from the boot of Chilton after Acorn were awarded a penalty, 2 minutes later Leigh Rientoul dropped a vital field goal to give the visitors that important 7 point gap.
With the last play of the game Tom Wood scored on the overlap wide out with Hardy converting for a final score of 17 points to 16.
Best for Acorn in a determined and gritty performance were Kevin brayshaw, Matt Withers and Daryl North.
