Acorn A impressive with 4th win on the bounce

After what was a shaky start to the season, nobody would be criticised for suggesting that Acorn A were favourites for the wooden spoon after 7 straight defeats in YML division 1. However, Tony Shepherd and Mick Dobson, the A team coaching team continued to have faith and desire to change their fortunes. Tony had always said; “we only need the one win and we will kick on.”
Now, after 4 wins, Acorn A team now find themselves in 6th after victory over 3rd placed Keighley this weekend. With Keighley only 3 points ahead and with 2 games in hand, a top 3 finish is not out of the question. Testament must go to the coaches, whose task to put out an A team is the toughest job any week but especially when morale is low and the first team get priority over available players.
With 2 big wins this weekend; 1st team 50-16 away at Blackbrook, and our A team recording a 48-20 victory over Keighley Albion there is a real buzz about the place.
Ally this with York’s fantastic win over Toronto the game in the city is on the up.
Acorns win over Keighley began impressively after only 3 minutes, dominating the initial exchanges and using the ball effectively to set up Tom Mackley for a try out wide.
Keighley were quick to react and were equally impressive as they pushed forward winning a repeat set close to the line. Stand Off Alfie Seeley caused problems for Acorn all afternoon and this started with his guile creating the space for him to score. Finlay Meegan added the 2 to give Keighley the lead.
Antony Chilton returned after his recent horrific accident and was instrumental in everything that Acorn did; on 15 minutes his kick on the last tackle was not cleared by Keighley’s full back allowing Joe Burns to gratefully accept the chance of touching down. Chilton added the conversion to regain the advantage. The advantage was extended after 32 minutes, Nathan Hammerton successfully dived in from dummy half. Chilton converting.
Keighley hit back again 4 minutes from the end of the half, a great break down the left hand side by Seeley before offloading to winger Connor Taylor who rounded his opposite number to score under the posts. Meegan converted. 16-12 going into the break made for a competitive game, but Acorn played every minute, skilful ball work all the way out to Ben Dale on the wing gave them a score on the stroke of half time. Chilton converted from touch to give Acorn a 10 point advantage.
3 minutes into the second period Karl Harton again showed that he is too strong when receiving the ball in full flight for any defence, extending Acorns lead.
Ben Dale was the next to benefit from Chiltons kicking game; a well-judged kick into the corner gave Ben Dale the opportunity to pick the ball out of the air to score. Chilton converting.
Keighley hit back 3 minutes later, caught out by a quick play the ball Prop Joe Preston broke the line and was unstoppable over15 metres.
Acorns 7th try was a beauty, Chilton and Paul Payne combined twice in a fast flowing move followed by a kick over by Chilton who re-gathered to score and adding the 2.
Alfie Seeley demonstrated that despite the extending score line, Keighley were never going to give up and after getting the better of Acorns defence crossed for his second of the afternoon.
The last 10 minutes however was dominated by Acorn. Joel Johnson and Karl Harton caused mayhem for the Keighley defence, Johnsons break followed by a superb kick whilst in full flight for Harton, supporting well, to gather and score.
Joel Johnson was then left to put the icing on the cake after Karl Harton again went close, scooting in from dummy half. Chilton capped his MOM performance with his 6th conversion.
