Chairman's Message
During the season ahead we will witness a number of changes and we will face a number of challenges.
As I said at the AGM in May, it is time for York RUFC to become a more professional and modern rugby club both on and off the pitch and this season we welcome a number of new faces to the playing side, the coaching side and the committee.
I have for a long time believed that we have the ability and fire power at York to do extremely well on the pitch.
This year we have retained the core players who performed so well last year. We are also seeing the return of some players who have previously been very influential at the club. We are bolstering the playing sides with one or two new faces and we also see Sean Bass leading a team of coaches with a wealth of experience and a fresh approach to coaching.
Whilst new players and a fresh approach can inject vigour and ambition, they cannot guarantee success. To me, this comes down to the attitude of the players, the coaches, the supporters and the committee. We must all accept that in an amateur rugby club, family and work commitments of our players and volunteers must come first, however, I do believe that if our attitude both on and off the pitch is right then success will follow.
Over the last year we have seen the completion of the first phase of our clubhouse development. The development committee continue to work tirelessly and now start the process to complete phase two.
They will require assistance from every member of every sports club at Clifton Park and I hope that you will support them in their ambitions to make Clifton Park Sports Club one of the finest places to play sport in the county.
When you compare the facilities at Clifton Park to other rugby clubs, I am sure you will agree, that we are lucky to be able to play rugby here.
Over the last few years the rugby club, like any other business in the world, has faced its own financial challenges with many of the individuals and businesses who have traditionally supported the club having to tighten their own purse strings.
The club is heavily dependant upon its sponsors and we are extremely grateful to our main sponsors, Grantside, SAY Scaffolding, PM Flooring, Sporting Connexions and, of course, the Quality Street Gang for their continued support.
Micky Negri and other members of the committee work hard throughout the season to win new sponsors and I would ask all those involved in the rugby club to assist the committee in finding new sponsors. Even the smallest of contributions will help and I would be delighted to speak to anyone interested in sponsoring the club in the future.
The success of York RUFC is also dependant upon the time given and work undertaken by a number of volunteers who work incredibly hard throughout the season.
I would like to thank all these volunteers for their efforts. York RUFC is heavily indebted to them and their continued support is greatly appreciated.
Finally, and most importantly, I hope that everyone enjoys their time at Clifton Park this season. Whilst success on the pitch is what any club ultimately aims for, enjoyment is why we play, watch and become involved with rugby and enjoyment should be at the heart of every rugby club.
In this spirit I would ask everyone to invite all their friends and family to the club and help make York RUFC a family friendly rugby club were everyone involved has a tremendous amount of fun.
With best wishes,
Mark de-V Roberts
Chairman
