The visitors take the spoils and show York how to finish opportunities and convert chances into tries.

York hosted Bridlington in the first of this seasons games with Brid and renewed the friendly rivalry with the seasiders. It was the visitors who took the spoils, as they showed York how to finish opportunities and convert chances into tries.

York were first to score as their early pressure resulted in a penalty within Dawes’ range (3–0). Bridlington responded well and showed their willingness and ability to run the ball out of their own half. Some neat offloads were rewarded as York were this time penalised for infringing at the breakdown (3-3). Whilst York maintained an equal footing in the set piece and had as much possession as the visitors, it was Bridlington who had the cutting edge in attack. York had pushed hard in the Brid 22 but a turnover and a relatively loose kick by the defending team resulted in the first try. The Brid centre caught the clearing kick in his own half and showed good pace to canter in as the York players struggled to get back into defensive mode after attacking. Converted, Brid were (3-10) to the good.

The home team responded with another Dawes penalty but were no closer to scoring a try. Unable to offer any real bite in attack, York were punished again as Bridlington turned defence into attack, showing good offloading skills as the prop Waines bullocked up field and offloaded to flanker Sutton to cross the whitewash. Converted (6-17). Bridlington extended their lead with a third try as they attacked with ease from their own half, dragging the York defence left and then kicking cross-field to the the waiting winger to cross unchallenged. The extra points added, Brid were (6-24) up.

York added a third penalty from the boot of Dawes before the half time break to narrow the gap slightly but in reality, did little to hide the fact that Bridlington had scored three tries to York’s zero. The home team lacked continuity and struggled to build phases of play. Too often they had kicked ball away, giving Brid the opportunity to counter attack.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were much the same as the first half as Bridlington continued to soak up any pressure York tried to put on the visitors and attacked with precision when the opportunity arose. Another Brid score took the game to (9-31) and probably out of York’s reach. York did however throw a certain amount of caution to the wind and had the better of the play for 10 minutes. From a series of penalties and dominant scrums, York got a try. A good scrum drive allowed the replacement Number 8 Mackay to control the ball well and then crash over from short range. Dawes converted to close to (16-31).

Unfortunately, York were unable to capitalise on their first score as Bridlington attacked from the restart and crossed for their most impressive try. Backs and forwards worked well together to keep the ball alive through a number of offloads and although the score was out wide, the conversion was added (16-38). The final points went with the flow of the game as Bridlington added a final penalty to end the game to leave the score at (16-41).

York will be disappointed that they were unable to capitalise on any of the good work they did in the set piece and that some of their defence wasn’t as sure as it should be. Bridlington on the other hand were good for their 5 point win. Next week York are away to Yarnbury, who have only won one of their seven games this season. Going with form, York will respond to a poor home performance with a better away win, let’s hope so.
