For the second year in a row the U16 contested the Yorkshire Cup Final

On a perfect day for rugby a large crowd at Hull Ionians were treated to a great game between two well matched sides. Old Rishworthians proved why they had made it to the final with wave after wave of attacking rugby and hard running around the fringes from their forwards. However York stuck to the game plan successfully countering any attempts to kick long and over the back three whilst the forwards tackled themselves into the floor and resisted several prolonged attacks on the goal line.
York got the perfect start with a great display of off loading and handling skills taking the ball 60 yards up the pitch at pace resulting in a try for Ben Husband converted by Sam Elliot.
Elliot added a penalty before Rishworthians scored a great try out wide making it 10-5 at half time.
York restarted badly and with the penalty count against them increasing, Rishworthians looked odds on to score but some hard and committed defence kept them out. York worked their way back up field and from a centre field scrum on the 10 metre line ran a well practiced move reversing the backs from left to right with the fullback coming in that resulted in a well finished try for Will Fordy.
Yellow cards and injuries followed but York held out 15 points to 5.
Thanks to Hull Ionians for hosting the finals day which was well run and to Old Rishworthians who proved to be as tough a set of opponents as their unbeaten season suggested. All in all a final worthy of the toughest age grade competition in the country.
