Match Report. Saturday 14th April 2012
Bridlington 18 – 27 York.
By Steve Maud.
York probably did Bridlington a favour at Dukes Park on Saturday by extinguishing any lingering hopes they may have had of promotion. Bridlington have punched above their weight all season living of turn over ball and quick tap and go penalties. If you can control the ball then you can control Bridlington’s undoubted exciting loose support and counter attacking style of play. That’s exactly what York did with some notable performances in their tight five which gave Kay, Maud and Thorpe the platform to control the game from the back row. Throw in an excellent 100% kicking return by Dawes on a very windy day and York should have won by a larger margin.
The usual robust start saw two sides that both seemed very up for the game with Bridlington playing into a strong wind. Bridlington started well and after being awarded a penalty in the York half tapped and went York scrambling defence held, they turned the ball over on their own 5 metre line and Dawes launched a clearing kick from inside his own touch in goal area, the chase was good and Bridlington were forced to kick for touch from inside their own 22. From the lineout the Bridlington midfield was caught offside in front of their posts 30 metres out Dawes kicked the penalty.
After 12 minutes York were awarded a scrum on the Bridlington 40 metre line. York was to dominate the scrummage area all afternoon. Maud picked and went breaking the first line of defence quick ball was recycled which saw first Hepworth and the Rutherford carrying the ball well in powerful drives, further quick ball was released to the backs which saw Pete Martin crash over to score the first try. (Just as well he did he had a 4 on 1 overlap outside him). Dawes Converted 0 – 10.
On 20 minutes York were awarded a penalty on the Bridlington 5 metre line. Unsurprisingly they elected a scrum, the drive came on Bridlington went back and in desperation the Bridlington front row stood up a metre from their own line the referee blew his whistle, was he going under the posts for a penalty try? No it was against York, a decision that left everyone including the Bridlington coaching team bewildered. Bridlington cleared their lines. From the lineout on their own 22 metre line Bridlington ran through weak mid-field defence in the York back line the York back three defenders did not engage the ball carrier soon enough as Bridlington moved the ball well through the hands of the supporting runners for outside centre Gareth Roberts to score under the York posts. Mellonby converted 7 – 10.
On 26 minutes Bridlington knocked the ball on just inside their own 22 metre line. From the scrum Andy Kay picked and went from number 8 position, York in a move of the training ground set a up a maul and with the ball to the back of the maul, they drive Bridlington back over the try line from all of 15 metres. Joe Maud finishing off an excellent forwards try. Dawes converts 10 – 17.
York were dominating field position using the wind well and Bridlington struggled to get out of their half when after 35 minutes Bridlington were again caught offside at the breakdown and punished for their indiscretion by a 30 yard Dawes penalty kick.
On the stroke of halftime Bridlington following a rare excursion into the York half were awarded a penalty in front of the York posts 20 metres out. The kick hits the post York gather the rebound but fall to find touch are again penalised for going off their feet at the next breakdown, Boyle kicks the ball away after the whistle and is yellow carded. Half time came with no further scores. Half time score 7 – 20.
From the restart York defend well with 14 men for the first ten minutes of the second half; Boyle re-joined the game with no change in the score. After 14 minutes Rutherford who had been dominant throughout his scrummaging lost his footing at the scrum and was penalised for deliberate collapsing even though he was going forward, Coach Clegg was sent to the naughty step by the referee and Bridlington convert the penalty. 10 – 20.
York responded well and following a period of control of the ball Bridlington are penalised deep in their own 22. York kicked to the corner and a well-executed catch and drive saw Jim Rossington emerge with the ball after the try was awarded. Dawes nailed the conversion from touchline into the wind and York lead 10 – 27.
Bridlington kicked another penalty and with about 5 minutes to go the game was petering out as a contest. Bridlington were awarded a scrum on the halfway line, York pack had already pushed the Brid pack off the ball on three occasions. The drive came on and Boyle moved forward in his scrum half role when he was fish hooked by his opposite number (fish hooking is where a player pulls another players face usually forcing his fingers into the opponents mouth and pulling him, extremely dangerous foul play) Joe Maud reacted and went to the defence of his team mate. A brawl ensued with players from both sides exchanging blows. John Dawes in particular received several punches to the head. A very unfortunate incident that spoilt what had to that point been a good competitive game of rugby. Maud can count himself as unlucky in the sense that he was the only player red carded when order was restored, The referee apparently admitting later that he had seen the initial offending act but had forgotten to deal with it.
York failed to regain their composure and Bridlington benefitted from some poor defence to score a try with the last play of the game which they were unable to convert.
Final score Bridlington 18 – 27 York
