False Bay U20s 10 - Yorkshire Terriers 18, 4th Aug 11
The Terriers returned to winning ways with a solid if not spectacular win against a False Bay side bolstered during the game with several Senior players.
A game, played under lights on a warm evening, in which a strong Terriers’ Pack set up and maintained forward domination throughout. Tries, Malthouse 10 mins and Coates after 20 mins, in the first half came from two compelling rolling mauls that the home side couldn’t hold. Greg Lound converted the second of the tries, from wide out to give the visitors a 12 - 0 half time lead. Three further scores went a begging early on, in a half shortened to 32 mins brought about by injuries and following a display of ill discipline from the home side, as the referee adjudged the ball had not been grounded across the line!
It seemed only a matter of time before the Terriers’ domination in the second half would breach the homeside defence - strong runs from No 8, Joe Maude, in particular were prominent. But in fairness the opposition rallied with a change of tactics to disrupt the strong Terriers’ Pack at the scrum base and ruck. Two successful penalties for opposition offside, one from Lound and then replacement Scrum Half Joe Rowntree, were scant reward for the large percentage of territorial domination - but by now the Terriers were 18-0 ahead.
Two late lapses in concentration as the Coaches rang the changes led to blind side unconverted tries for the visitors quick right winger - the second of them highly questionable given that the flag was raised then lowered by the home sub running the line!!
A good night was had by all at the post match dinner, in Clubhouse afterwards, and Shields and Ties were exchanged with the False Bay Club - one of the oldest and proudest Clubs in the Cape.
Terriers are off to Namibia tomorrow (early morning Friday) on the last leg of the Tour; the Squad focussed on the 4 out of 5 wins target. Prior to the last game the group take one of two trips to either Shark Cave Diving in Gansbaii or the Cape Nature Reserve and Boulder Beach for Baboons and Penguins and lunch in one of the two Oceans at the tip of Africa!
See you soon. One more report to follow from Windhoek before Safari Time!
