The Terriers secured 4 out of 5 Tour-wins with a narrow victory at Windhoek today in a mighty physical battle.
Rotating pretty much the whole squad during this encounter; the Terriers started well enough but found themselves having to dig deep at half-time as they turned around a significant difference at half-time. Early scores from Simon Hammersley and Joe Maude were cancelled out by sloppy tackling in midfield before Hammersley slotted a penalty on 33 mins to narrow the deficit at half-time.
Taking drink breaks in the intense heat on the 20 mins and seeking the shade at half time did nothing to stop the physical intensity of the game. After a 40m penalty kick, for a home team offside infringement, by Hammersley returned the lead to the Terriers. The ‘Namibian Select’ stepped-up the physicality in the last quarter in an effort to thwart the Terriers. The aggression ‘boiled-over’ a little, resulting in red cards for Kitson and his opposite number whom were involved in a lengthy brawl, and a yellow card for replacement prop Coates.
The Terriers were now making more clean breaks as the home side wilted in the heat and intensity of the encounter. Winger Tom Papworth scored the best try of the match in the corner after 41 mins, the conversion missed from wide out. The Squad was now out on its feet, but in true Terriers tradition hung on to the end despite a late converted try by the Namibians after 67 mins.
A well deserved can of beer ‘or two’ before the hosts BBQ. The squad are off to Etosha National Park this weekend on the last leg of our lengthy adventure. Pictures to follow - see you all next week!
