Zug return to winning ways
Cup match in glorious sunshine at the foot of the Alps
The FSR Cup quarter final saw a small bunch of merry men travel down to Bellinzona where we faced Ticino. Greated with 18 degree sunshine and a beautiful pitch we confirmed our match strategies and warmed up. With many new player combinations and people playing outside of their normal position it was going to be a great challenge for us. Ticino, coached by one of the Swiss National forwards coaches, showed upfront their intent to challenge in the scrum. The first 30 minutes saw Ticino take advantage of three soft penalties for not releasing the tackled player and they were up 9-0. Then a break from our experienced prop, Fabien, today playing 12, saw him crash over the line to bring it 9-5 at half time.
The Half time talk was clear and concise and Zug took to the second half like men possessed. Returning from long term injury, Alex ran through 3 defenders to score his first try of the season on his first appearance. Brandon re found his kicking mojo to make it quickly 9 - 12 to Zug. One final cheap penalty levelled the scores to 12-12.
The last 30 minutes saw the men on Blue play the structured rugby they practise and are fully capable of. Another try for Brandon, which he duly converted, then a replacement Battleship coming in the centres saw him carry the ball, as well as 3 defenders, across the line to score a try. Converted by Brandon saw Zug 12 -27 up. By this time Zug had won the mind games and Ticino began to self destruct.
Final honours went to Brandon with a crash ball over the line, with Ian D slotting the conversion in his return from Military Service.
Big call out to Dave M who came down and played having arrived from New York that morning. Well done boys..
We now move on to the Semi Final on May 13th at home v Zurich.
