AFC Emley End Of Season Review

The 2017/2018 turned out to be a mixed yet successful season for the Pewits.

After a disappointing start to the season, consisting of four losses and just one win in the month of August, Emley had a much-improved September. They won five games, drawing one, and losing just one. In those wins was an emphatic 5-0 away win against Nostell Miners Warfare. Their one draw in September came against now promoted and league champions Knaresborough Town.

That result made Emley the first team this season to take points from Town, snapping their 9-game winning streak. Emley also secured a 2-1 victory over Shirebrook town, meaning that the Pewits scalped two of the top six teams in the league early on in the season. Emley’s longest win streak of three games in a row, also came in September. Lewis Dickinson led the scoring for Emley during September, with 5 goals over their 7 games.

October was a mixed month for Emley, losing five of their seven fixtures. Included in those losses were early exits from the FA Vase Cup & the League Cup. Cup defeats a side, it was an average run of results in the league, having won two and lost three games. In those two league wins came a 7-1 thumping of Swallownest FC, Emley’s biggest win of the season, with Tabby Magida helping himself to a Hat-trick. That one-sided score line was Swallownest’s heaviest defeat this season.

November was a 50/50 month for Emley, winning four and losing four of their eight fixtures that month. Their four wins came in pairs of back to back wins. Included in those wins was a 3-1 home victory over Hall Green United in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup. Adam Wilson and Jordan Townend were joint stop scorers for November.

The Christmas season in December was one of few fixtures for Emley in compassion to October and November, where they played 7 & 8 games in a month. It was a positive month of fixtures, with two wins, one draw and just the one loss. One of those victories was a second win in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup, when Emley beat local team Shelley FC 1-0 away from home, thanks to a first half Curtis Roberts goal.

In December, Emley twice faced Glasshoughton Welfare in league fixtures, drawing the first game away, before a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture. Only a 90th minute equalizer from Jamie Simpson in the teams first meeting prevented Emley from doing the double over Glasshoughton.

It was an average start to 2018 for Emley, with two losses, one win, and one draw in January, including a 3-0 loss to Penistone church that saw Emley exit the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup in the Quarter Finals. Emley’s lone win in January was a 2-1 win over Dronfield Town.

Due to the horrible weather that battered the UK over February, a lot of games were postponed and re-arranged, as a result Emley only played three times in this month. These three games ended in two defeats, 4-0 to Selby Town, 2-1 to Grimsby Borough, and a 0-0 draw with Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

March was a great month for Emley, they took 10 of a possible 15 points from opponents, registering three wins and one draw, and just one loss. A return of 15 points in a month was the most from Emley this season. Jordan Townend and Alex Slack were the top scorers in March with three goals each, both scoring against Shirebrook Town and Ollerton Town.

Now in April, with the curtains falling on the season, Emley have played four games, with two away games remaining. Of the four they have played they have lost three and drawn one. Their lone point of April came in a 2-2 draw with Rossington Main. Emley will hope to end the season on a positive note with away wins over FC Bolsover and Hallam FC.
