Ashton’s second friendly of the season saw them take on last season’s National League champions in the shape of Macclesfield Town. The visitors were first to show as a cross picked out the giant figure of Harry Smith who headed wide but shortly afterwards Tyrone Marsh’s pass split the defence putting Smith clear and he squeezed his effort home despite the efforts of an Ashton defender on the line.
With 20 minutes gone Sam Sheridan gave Josh Ollerenshaw a difficult back pass to deal with and Danny Whittaker charged down the keeper’s attempted clearance to register the second. Jamie Grimes then just failed to connect with Michael Rose’s free kick but ten minutes later Scott Sephton fouled Whittaker just outside the D and Rose curled a low effort into the corner. 6 minutes before the break and Smith glanced home Ben Stephens‘ cross to make it 4-0.

Into the second period and after Town had replaced all 10 of their outfield players two of the trialists combined to provide the fifth goal after a mistake in the home defence. The Robins pulled one back as Nic Evangelinos’ shot took a slight deflection after good work by one of Ashton’s trialists and the same player then volleyed wide after showing good control.

Ashton Utd: Ollerenshaw, Stachini, Lees, Sheridan, Sephton, Evangelinos, Tomsett. Subs: Dale, Woodford. (all other players trialists).
