Ashton beat Trafford at the third time of asking this season thanks to a thrilling injury time winner and so moved into the top half of the Evostik Premier Division. The game got off to a slow start with both teams sizing each other up and almost 10 minutes had elapsed before Jay Gorton forced Robertson into a tip away from Ashley Young’s long throw in. For the home side Shelton Payne’s crossfield pass was picked up by Simon Hackney who cut inside before shooting over the bar.
Joe Shaw then intercepted a pass for Trafford and tried a speculative shot which Phillips gathered before Richard Bennett’s header spun off Bayunu allowing Pilkington a sight of goal – Bayunu recovered in time to block the shot at the expense of a corner which Kayde Coppin fired over the top. The opening goal arrived courtesy of a mistake as Phillips threw the ball straight to the Premier division’s leading scorer Payne who ignored an open goal and chose to cut inside before being crowded out but from the resulting corner the ball dropped to left back Andy Smart who squeezed home a low effort.
Phillips redeemed himself shortly afterwards as poor play in the visitors’ defence allowed Michael Oates a clear run on goal but the keeper was quickly out to smother. Ashton almost drew level just before the break as Robertson effected a double save from Young’s free kick, also recovering to block Chadwick’s follow up. The Robins made the start to the second half they were looking for as Bennett picked up Coppin’s pass and fired home on the turn before he turned past another defender before shooting straight at the keeper. With Coppin’s influence on the game growing he cut inside from the left wing and brought a full length save out of Robertson before Smart went close to his second goal at the other end seeing a tremendous 30 yard effort pushed away by Phillips.
The game was now opening up completely as both teams searched for the winner and Trafford came closest as Michael Oates headed a long corner back for Shaw to roll a header off the crossbar. Once again Coppin was the provider as he set up Ashley Young for a low effort which went just wide of goal before Rory Fallon gave former Robins winger Hackney a clear run on goal, his effort beating Phillips but rolling past the far post. Entering injury time another great run from the wing by Coppin saw him race past several defenders into the area before hammering home the winning goal.
