3 Goal Blitz Sinks The Yeltz!

By

Report by Dave Robinson.

3 Quickfire goals in the second period were enough for Ashton to gather all the points in the West Midlands from their first visit to Halesowen’s ground The Grove. Things had all looked so different in the first half as following a glaring miss by Kevin Leadbetter in the first minute Jay Gorton sliced a right wing cross from Tonks into his own net after just 5 minutes.

Worse was to follow soon after as captain Gorton and Sam Wilson clashed heads whilst both trying to clear the same ball resulting in a delay of several minutes before Gorton was replaced by Mark Haslam. Ashton were still carving out chances with the home defence living dangerously despite starting play with the second lowest goals against total and only Sargeant coming quickly off his line denied Martin Pilkington after Dale Johnson had set him up. The home side could have moved further ahead as a trademark long throw in saw Charlton glance his header just past the far post.

Within ten minutes of the restart the Robins had turned the game on its head as first Lee Rick picked up a clearance from Leadbetter’s free kick and placed his effort well into the top corner and with just another couple of minutes elapsed Phillips made a quick clearance which saw Pilkington volley home into the far corner. Ashton were still not finished as Haslam’s long pass was collected by Johnson who played in Pilkington for a fine left foot finish to leave the hosts reeling.

Town almost got a goal back as an ill-judged backpass by Jack Higgins needed a goal line clearance by Wilson and they did reduce the deficit on 66 minutes as Tonks’ long throw in was flicked on by Hull and knocked home at the far post by Griffiths. The visitors had a couple of further scares before the final whistle sounded as a free kick led to Phillips dropping a high ball and Hasley’s goalbound header was cleared off the line by Wilson and after Higgins had headed Phillips’ long clearance just past the far post Tonks’ corner saw Charlton’s header blocked on the line by Robinson.

Team: Phillips, Wilson, Pearson, Gorton (Haslam), Higgins, Young, Rick, Gee, Johnson (Oates), Pilkington & Leadbetter (Robinson).

SNU: Hill & Sherratt.
