Ashton took all 3 points at Hurst Cross after the relegation threatened Steelmen had fought back from a first half deficit. With Jack Dyche returning to Scunthorpe Ryan Crowther took over up front and helped himself to two goals, the first arriving 10 minutes before the interval with a fine finish after Matty Chadwick’s low free kick had only been half cleared.
The game got off to a slow start with Chadwick’s lob from Dominic Smalley’s long clearance not high enough to beat Grant on 15 minutes before a square pass saw Crawford rag his effort wide from 20 yards. Crowther then just failed to connect with Chadwick’s help on from Smalley’s throw in and Corby came close to levelling just before the break as Ben Milnes’ cross saw Jordan Crawford’s far post header held low down by Luke Pilling.
The visitors came back into the argument on the resumption and a great run by Trainer saw Ben Milnes place his effort well wide before Spencer Weir- Daley should have done better then to head David Bell’s cross into Pilling’s arms but after Pilling had been out quickly to block Weir-Daley’s effort the resulting corner saw Bell’s short delivery fired home by Milnes after 64 minutes.
Leslie’s cross was then knocked back by Milnes for Weir-Daley to be denied close in by Pilling before the onrushing Grant just denied Crowther from Chadwick’s through ball. With 12 minutes left Steven Leslie’s pass saw Milnes’ effort come back off the inside of the post but 6 minutes later Crowther capitalised on a defensive error to slot home his second and after Crowther had been denied a potential hat-trick by a possible handball outside the area by Grant, Chadwick made a superb run from the left touchline and fired home Ashton’s third.
