United Short On Luck Again

By

Report by David Robinson

An entertaining encounter at Hurst Cross was marred by what appeared to be a controversial decision which denied the home side a late equaliser. As usual the home side were first into their stride and in-from winger Kayde Coppin set up the opening goal on 6 minutes as his cross from the by-line was converted from close range by leading scorer Martin Pilkington.
Coppin had already shown his intent as early as the first minute when he cut inside before firing over and shortly afterwards he dummied his way to the by-line and saw his centre headed over by Joe O’Neill. High scoring visitors Worksop then moved onto the attack as a loose clearance by Pearson saw Mettam’s shot hit his own player before a free kick from Murray produced a tremendous save from Phillips who then had to be smartly off his line to deny the onrushing Muldoon.
The Tigers were back on level terms ten minutes from the interval as Murray’s curling cross was headed home by centre forward Denton before Pearson’s great run from midfield ended with him firing over. After the break Pilkington exchanged passes with Lee Rick before firing wide and was then flattened by Quinn when looking to have a clear run on goal but the referee deemed a free kick to be sufficient punishment. A decisive pass from Coppin then found Pilkington well placed but he fired wide of the near post when he could have taken more time.
Midway through the half the visitors moved ahead as Salt’s through pass saw Mettam allowed to proceed by the linesman and he finished confidently past Phillips and matters got even worse for the hosts as a long free kick was headed across goal by Denton allowing Muldoon to volley home an unstoppable effort. Pilkington’s pull back was then fired over by Rick before substitute Chadwick gave Ashton hope with a left foot finish after a 1-2 with O’Neill and Ashton were convinced they had equalised as a left wing corner reached Gorton at the far post and his effort appeared to be over the line but with the linesman unmoved the ref allowed play to continue. Ashton’s last throw of the dice saw Chadwick again cut inside before O’Neill just missed the far post with his effort.
Team: Phillips, Lynch, Pearson (Coo), Gorton, Higgins, Young, Gee, Rick (Chadwick), O’Neill (Halford), Pilkington, Coppin. SNU: Killeen, Steadman
