Robins Breeze Past Olympic

Ashton Tame Windy ConditionTo Take The Points Report by David Robinson

Ashton United continued their impressive recent form with a fine victory over fellow play-off hopefuls Rushall. A crossfield pass found Obeng’s effort beating the onrushing Phillips but the effort drifted wide before the opening goal arrived on 18 minutes as a backpass was hit too hard for keeper Gemmell to control and the dropping ball was touched through to debutant Aaron Chalmers who burst into the area before finishing confidently. Visiting winger Obeng cut inside and won a foul which was adjudged to be just outside the area but the resulting free kick was blocked before the same player glanced a header wide from Spink’s corner. Dale Johnson then turned past two defenders before seeing his effort deflected wide. The hosts doubled their advantage just before the interval as Matty Chadwick ran through the midfield and played in Martin Pilkington who finished at the second attempt.

The conditions started to dominate after the break with a strong wind blowing leading to several misplaced passes before Rushall number 10 Ashton put Obeng clean through on Phillips only for him to slice well wide of the target. Ashton almost extended their lead as a slick free kick saw Dale Johnson’s lay off sidefooted against the post by Chris Baguley and shortly afterwards Johnson himself was put clean through by a fine Chadwick pass but saw his chip over Gemmell roll against the upright before running out of play.

Olympic’s best chance of getting a goal back saw a left wing cross headed goalwards by Adebola bringing a fine point blank save out of Phillips before substitute Mugisha sped into the area and beat Phillips with his cross only for Lynch to clear from near the goal line. The Robins could have made things even more comfortable as Kayde Coppin put Matty Chadwick clear running from his own half but he was denied at the last by Gemmell as Ashton comfortably held on to the points.
