Phillo Sinks Marine

By

Robins Progress in Doodson Cup Via Penalty Shoot Out Report by David Robinson.

Ashton progressed to the next round of the League Cup with their second victory of the season over Marine in a game where the ultimate outcome was surely the right result. On a pitch in surprisingly good condition given the recent weather the visitors controlled possession from the start and Joe O’Neill found Kayde Coppin on the right wing whose cross just drifted behind before O’Neill took a long ball down and again set Coppin free before his left wing cross was knocked away.
Matty Chadwick then cut inside 2 defenders before dragging his effort wide of the near post and a fine break then saw Chadwick just denied by a last gasp tackle which squeezed the ball just past the post after Coppin had reached the byline. On the half hour a dangerous cross by home full back Dowling was headed out by Chadwick as Marine registered their first attempt on goal.
After the resumption a square pass found Rainford in space but he sliced his effort wide of the target and then Coppin cut inside after receiving a long pass from Gary Gee but was also well off the mark. Phillips then saved a free kick from Corrigan at the foot of the post before a decisive break should have given the visitors the lead as Lee Rick’s perfectly timed pass released Ashley Young in the area but his shot hit the inside of the post and bounced to safety with the goal at his mercy.
A short corner was then played to Corrigan whose decent effort was tipped over by Phillips and the resulting corner saw Grannon’s header drop into the keeper’s arms before a good run from Rainford ended with an effort swinging wide of goal before Coppin’s cross to the far post was headed over by Young.
And so to penalties and Ashton appeared to be in trouble as Joe O’Neill’s kick was saved but sub Jones saw his effort saved by Phillips before the keeper scored himself and Corrigan blazed the final kick wide to send the visitors through.

Team: Phillips, Halford, Lynch, Gorton, Higgins, Gee, Young, Rick (Williams), Chadwick (Pilkington), O’Neill, Coppin. SNU: Baguley, Coo, Steadman
