Promotion Still Not Beyond Us!

Jay Gorton speaks to James Burch.

In Captain Jay Gorton’s absence, Ashton United have conceded six goals in their last four matches. Including late equalisers in the sides last two games against Frickley Athletic on Tuesday night and then Kings Lynn Town on Saturday.

These dropped points have seen the Robins automatic promotion hopes dented, with FC United picking up four points from six in this time.

Set-backs like this aren’t new to the hierarchy and players at Hurst Cross, with Gorton and 90% of his side being part of the 13/14 squad that lost agonisingly in the play-off final against AFC Fylde 10-months ago.

After fracturing his cheekbone and damaging his eye socket against Halesowen Town nearly a month ago, the robust centre-half has turned into a dedicated spectator, as he told the website how he was put through the ringer following score updates against the Linnets at the weekend as he said;

“Watching from the side-lines last weekend against Kings Lynn Town I witnessed so many emotions in a 90-minute game of football.”

The centre-half added; “With the side 1-0 up going into the final moments of the game, I thought we were set for a huge away win. However, we were hit by the killer blow conceding the equaliser late on and it hurt."

“I know how hard the lads work behind the scenes and there is no better feeling than winning a game. When it is snatched away from you, it just shows how cruel a game football can be at times. Despite this though we will bounce back!”

In the form of Vice-Captain, Jack Higgins and Sam Wilson, the Robins have had ample cover at the back and on another day, the table could have placed the Tamesiders top of the league.

Gorton spoke in a determined fashion and guaranteed the side that the wins will return... starting with Matlock Town on Saturday at Hurst Cross.

“The team have conceded six in four games in my absence and many have said my absence is affecting the team. I know this isn’t the case though and the likes of Jack and Sam are doing a sterling job in the heart of the defence.”

“Many factors have prevented us from picking up those all-important wins and I can guarantee you that on Saturday we will get back to winning ways and show the whole league what we can do.”
