Ashton second best against Glossop 3s

By Pat Stokes

Ashton came out second best in this competitive game played in heavy conditions at Banky Lane.

After last week’s confident boosting 37-10 away win at Trafford MV Ashton were looking to kick on from that victory. Glossop had other ideas and the home side, somewhat depleted by injuries, struggled to get the upper hand against a strong outfit. The wet conditions made for a lot of handling errors but Glossop 3s were worthy winners by 6 tries to 2.
From the outset Ashton struggled to gain good ball from the scrum and lineouts and found themselves 14-0 down with two converted tries in the first quarter. A yellow card for scrum half Liam Crank also added to the pressure. The home did manage to get on the score sheet with a well worked try from winger Max Short who powered for a try just before half time. HT 5-14

The second half continued in a similar fashion with Glossop scoring three further tries in the third quarter to take the game beyond Ashton at 5-31. The game also went to uncontested scrums following an injury to Ashton’s front row. To their credit Ashton did not give up and flanker Josh Musgreave worked tirelessly in the back row to put in a man of the match performance. It was good to see Matt Stansfield back in the fray after a serious early season injury and veteran prop Tony Norman was reliable as ever. In the last 10 minutes Ashton pulled back a further try from Liam Crank which was by converted Jeff Smith. Glossop had the last say with a late try to make the score 12-36.

Next week Ashton are away at Heaton Moor 2s – 2.15pm kick off.
