Banbury United 1 Slough Town 3

Banbury United were beaten by Slough Town 3-1 at the Spencer Stadium to make it that they have now departed the FA Cup at the first hurdle for five consecutive seasons.

There were two changes from the Banbury line up from Tuesday night against Chesham. Ryan Howell coming in for the unavailable Joe Coleman and Will Green returning after injury to the front line with Danny Edmond reverting to the bench.

Banbury started brightly and in the first minute a Ryan Howell was just pushed around the post by James Warrington for a corner. Though Banbury were having more of the ball, Slough should have taken the lead in the 15th minute when Steve Sinclair broke through but with just Andy Kemp in the Banbury goal to beat he screwed his shot just wide as the custodian came out to narrow the angle. Just a minute later Banbury had a good chance when a deep cross from the left by Glenn Walker found the head of the on-rushing Ollie Stanbridge but his header went wide.

United took the lead in the 36th minute when Walker did well to set-up Simeon Williams on the right hand side of the penalty area who shot the ball past Warrington.

Slough equalised a minute before the break when the ball came in from the right and Sean Sonner found the space to head the ball past Kemp from around six yards. Banbury nearly responded immediately though as Howell worked his way through a ruck of players and set up an excellent chance for himself, only for him to put the ball well over the bar.

The first minute of injury time in the first half saw Danny Burnell through with a glorious chance. However in a one-on-one situation with Kemp, the striker lobbed it too high and over the bar.

Whilst Banbury had much more of the play in the first half, Slough were always causing problems with the through ball to their forwards and created as many decent chances as the home side.

Slough started the second half much the better of the two sides. In the 51st minute Burnell headed just wide and it was no surprise when just two minutes later they took the lead when Steve Sinclair struck the ball home from the right hand edge of the penalty area.

Banbury now struggled to get back into the game and were now looking second best. In the 65th minute Slough should have increased their lead when they were awarded a penalty but Burnell missed.

With Banbury pushing forward, looking for, though not really threatening, an equaliser, the inevitable happened and they were caught on the break in the 88th minute and substitute Ben Abbey rounded Kemp in a one-on-one situation and then slotted the ball into the back of the net.
