Barry defeat Cambrian & Clydach Vale and Haverfordwest County

Barry Town United took a priceless six points from their two home fixtures this week, as the club’s quest for the Welsh League Division One championship continued at Jenner Park.

On Saturday, an open and competitive match with Cambrian and Clydach Vale remained goalless until forward Jordan Cotterill dispatched a fine free-kick, helping the Town to a precious 1-0 win.

Then, a Tuesday night crowd of 362 saw Barry defeat title challengers Haverfordwest County by two goals to nil, with Louis Gerrard finishing off an intrepid individual run for their first, before showing sublime skill to set up TJ Nagi; the club’s leading goalscorer heading home the decisive second.

Haverfordwest travelled to Jenner Park unbeaten in the league since October, but after losing out in a unique pre-match stand-off, the Bluebirds were unable to crack the Barry defence, with goalkeeper Mike Lewis helping himself to a third consecutive clean sheet.

The pair of victories helped the Town move four points clear at the top of the division and served as a fitting tribute to beloved Barry supporter Noreen Sewell, who sadly passed away on Friday evening following a brave battle with cancer.

A familiar face at Jenner Park and games across the region, Barry Town paid its respects with a minute’s silence before the Cambrian match, with a spokesperson commenting that Noreen was “a wonderful lady”, reflecting the high esteem she was held in at the club.

This Saturday, Barry travel to Taffs Well in a 2.30pm kick-off, while third-placed Haverfordwest host bottom of the table Risca United and second-placed Goytre make the short trip to Monmouth Town.

With each of the top four sides having completed 22 fixtures, Barry’s haul of 47 league points sees them stand four points clear of Goytre and six of Haverfordwest, with eight games left to play.
