Final Home Game Bonus For Beddau

Beddau 29 Rumney 21 Swalec Division One East Match Report by Lynn West

Mix periods of scintillating attacking rugby with moments of careless abandon and you get somewhere near the kind of roller coaster experience the Beddau rugby supporter is currently enjoying. Rumney are not opponents to be taken lightly and right from the outset they looked likely to make this a difficult day. Big props Monck and Holliday were making a nuisance of themselves and the ball carriers Joe Mills and Mike Kelly were prominent in threatening to engulf the Beddau defence.

When Beddau eventually prised the ball away they forced a lineout in the Rumney 22. The throw went astray but a Rumney tap back was bounced on by Beddau tight head Liam Bodman. Lloyd Peart took the pass and swiftly returned it for Bodman to stage a repeat of the try he had scored at Rumney in the reverse fixture. Stephen Robinson added the angled conversion.

The normally reliable Danny Clarke pushed his kick wide of the uprights when Rumney had a quick opportunity to claw back some points. Beddau, though, produced a telling moment when Lloyd Peart snapped at a turnover and fed Bradley Coombes. Cameron Pimlow was brought into the move and with Daniel Fox, Rhys Watkins and Stephen Robinson also involved it was flanker Watkins who touched down at the posts for Stephen Robinson to convert.

Simon Wilde was found guilty of lying on the ball at the breakdown and sent to the bin. Rumney piled the touchline and advanced to a position under the posts. From a set scrum the one man advantage was used in exemplary manner for number eight Mike Kelly to score. Danny Clarke converted.

If Beddau sometimes infuriate with the commission of careless efforts the Rumney faithful must have been disappointed to see their scrummage concede a penalty that Stephen Robinson goaled from some way out. Again, though, Beddau showed their propensity to look gift horses in the mouth when a penalty from a slightly easier position was spurned in favour of the touchline. The lineout was secure enough but a dropped pass let Rumney off the hook.

Soon the Beddau support was again uplifted. A kick behind a ruck was charged down by the lively Bodman who made 30 of the remaining 50 metres to the line. Cameron Pimlow ranged alongside and took the scoring pass. Stephen Robinson converted and the half was reached at 24-7.

Beddau may have felt that their work was done. They showed no signs of that as they laid siege to the Rumney line in a period when everybody appeared intent on reaching the whitewash. Passes became slipshod and erratic and though it was invigorating to a degree a more patient approach would surely have yielded more dividends. As it was Rumney began to see that a lot of huffing and puffing hadn't brought their house down. As Beddau tried to run the ball out of a defensive position Cameron Pimlow's pass found replacement prop Tarion Emmanuel and the youngster who otherwise contributed a great deal to the forward effort, was unable to hold it. Danny Clarke picked up and sprinted to the line for a try that he also converted.

Time was running out but Cameron Pimlow obstructed a Rumney player and was yellow carded. Rumney were now in the driving seat but Lloyd Peart won his gamble at the breakdown and stole away with the ball. As he ran out of petrol he was happy to see right wing Stephen Robinson on the left touchline and he just squeezed in at the corner.

A good set up by the Rumney pack allowed Danny Clarke to fire out a long pass that full back Christian Edwards took at pace for an excellent score. Clarke's conversion, though, was the last scoring act of an enthralling final home game of the season for Beddau.
