IT'S DISAPPOINTMENT AS BOURNS GO DOWN AT BURTON

BURTON 29 BOURNVILLE 19

Bourns have made a habit of under performing on their visits to Peel Croft in recent times and the team was not able to reverse that trend on their latest visit to Burton. Despite several injuries in the squad, the team looked strong, but started the match in poor fashion conceding an early score after 2 minutes. Bourns knocked on at the kick off inside their 22. From the scrum the Burton forwards drove a few phases then the ball was span wide the other way and with a man over the centre scored in the corner and with a successful conversion the home side were 7-0 up in a blink. Bourns had uncharacteristic problems with their passing with the ball flying about all over the place with players taking high and low balls which halted momentum and made defending easy for the home side. It was apparent that Bourns had the ascendancy in the scrum. On half way the Burton scrum was shunted backwards forcing the number 8 to tidy. He then started a run leaving the Bourns defence floundering missing tackles and he scored in the corner for a 12 -0 early lead. Bourns got a scrum penalty and Reece Harrhy converted easily from the ten meter line. The home tight head got a yellow on 20 minutes for some chat, but Bourns couldn't take advantage as loose passing blunted attacks.

Bourns were getting past the gain line with the forwards but calamity struck on 30 minutes. Bourns were stripped in the tackle on the Burton 22 and were over committed. One pass to the winger on the blind side and he ran in from 70 meters for a score of 19-3. Reece Harrhy converted two long range penalties before half time to keep Bourns in touch at 19-9.

In the second half Bourns did have possession from scrums and line outs but the backs couldn't use it. Penalties were exchanged then Burton had a yellow for a red zone offence underneath their posts. The kick to the corner saw a driven line out and hooker James Weaver dived over to make the score 22-19 with around 15 minutes to go. However Burton took advantage of some poor midfield defence and their number 8 scored again for a 29-19 cushion. Bourns did their best with some long range running from debutante Alton McVey and flying winger Ethan Walker, but they were pulled up short and Bourns couldn't convert. A third yellow for the home side for a deliberate knock on made no difference as the final whistle sounded out.

A really disappointing performance will hopefully be addressed next week. The forwards went well in the set pieces, but that is not enough at this level of rugby. Star man was Tom Holliday who did get hold of their 8 and carried well. A special mention to young tight head Jake Hayden-Wright as he recovers from his jaw injury.

Next up is Derby at home.
