BOURNS BAG A BRACE OF WINS WITH GREAT RESULT ON THE ROAD AT DONNY

DONCASTER PHOENIX 17 BOURNVILLE33

A 12.30 kick off meant an early departure as Bourns headed to South Yorkshire to take on Doncaster Phoenix who ground share with Championship side Doncaster Knights. The Knights were at home, hence the early kick off and another re-shuffled team took to the field in round 6 of the Midlands Premier League.

Former Dudley K player Ryan Smitherman made his debut at full back, Matt McKeown moved into the second row. Jonjo Fanning returned to the flank accompanied by Benedict Shimwell who made the starting 15 for the first time. Flanker Angus Low took a bench place as not fully fit.

The early exchanges saw both sides show a willingness to keep the ball alive and run it, but both defences kept each others atttacks at bay between the 22's. On 15 minutes Bourns drove a lineout and had a free play from an offside. A kick over the top saw the ball bounce into the Donny in goal area. Winger Ethan Walker got a hand on it, but not with enough downward pressure, so play came back for the penalty which was duly slotted over by Rhys Harrhy. Bourns were dominating the scrums and Rhys kicked two more scrum penalties as Bourns now led 9-0 on the half hour.

Bourns then contributed to the first Doncaster try when a Bourns try seemed more likely. Eji made a break at 8 from a solid scrum and ran 30 meters well into the Donny 22. A wrong pick up option saw a turn over tackle and the Donny 9 was away. Ethan caught up but the offload to the supporting centre was good and the score was completed in the corner. The first time the opposition had been in our 22. However, Bourns responded with two tries of their own in the last five minutes of the half which reflected their dominance. Firstly Ethan Walker intercepted as Donny tried to run themselves out of trouble in the 22, superbly converted by Rhys, then just on half time, Bourns drove a line out 30 meters into the Donny 22. The ball was moved with procession and speed and Ethan turned provider to Ryan Smitherman joining the line for a great score once again converted, so half time saw Bourns lead 23-5.

Donny's game plan was not going to change, run everything, but the pressure on their backs early in the second half saw a loose ball picked up by Eji and the game was virtually safe at 30-5. Another scrum penalty saw Rhys kick his 4th penalty of the day to make it 33-5. The changes were rung as Bourns searched for the bonus point try, But Bourns became a little cautious in their play and allowed the always willing Donny backs to launch some attacks. Angus Low had come on and almost scored twice from open play, the second time a foot in touch chalked off the fourth try. As the game wound down Donny scored two late tries which allowed their centre to complete a hat trick with neat foot work, so a 33-17 win on the road.

Bourns really looked sharp at times and the forwards are starting to go well at set piece. The backs are settling in and are scoring tries. Donny voted stand off Mitch McGahan as star player who displayed great control and orchestrated the Bournville attack that caused the opposition problems all game.

Next up is a break from league action as Friday night lights comes to Averyfields as Bourns entertain Dudley Kingswinford in the quarter final of the North Midlands Cup on Friday the 12th October kick off 7.45.
