2018 Season Preview

By Anthony Sherwood

RUGBY LEAGUE IS BACK!!!

With the 2018 Rugby League season fast approaching Brentwood RLFC are looking forward but also still reflecting on a great 2017. The club saw more boys than ever selected for the London Broncos at Scholarship level and also witnessed two of its previous players selected and play in the 2017 World Cup which took place in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Both players took to the field and represented Scotland and Ireland respectively in their World Cup campaigns. This a fantastic achievement and something both of these players and indeed the club can be extremely proud of.

As well as our Scholarship boys we also have Caley Gray (Forward & Scotland U19 International) and Rian Horsman (Half-back) playing for the London Broncos Academy. This will be Caley’s second year with Rian having signed for them last Summer. After a good pre-season they played their first match of the 2018 season against their near neighbours London Skolars. The Skolars are a professional outfit competing in Championship 1 and have several players that have performed in Super League. The Broncos Academy narrowly lost by two points in this friendly, but keenly contested match with both Caley and Rian (on debut) performing well. It was particularly pleasing to see such a young side play with confidence and with two sixteen year olds playing in the half-back positions.

On the Club front Brentwood will once again be looking towards winning some silverware, particularly as the U14’s came so close in the Grand Final last year. The club are looking to run U11’s, U12’s, U14’s & U16’s once again in the London League with the adults participating in the Eastern Region. As usual the Club will be looking to tour with the U16’s planning to visit France and the U11’s & U12’s looking forward to taking on some French opposition over here. They will also compete in the Challenge Cup Festival once again where they will have the opportunity to take on sides from the North of England.

Club Chairman, Anthony Sherwood said “The club has had some real successes in recent years with players progressing along the player pathway so a big well done to Caley and Rian on making his Academy debut. I know everybody associated with the club is looking forward to another year and if anybody out there would like to play or sponsor Brentwood Rugby League FC then please get in touch via our website”.
