On a beautiful summer's day, the loss of the toss meant just over 41 overs in the field as Leatherhead scored 222 after early wickets for Richie Chibisa and Harrison Ward. Will Owen and Oliver Cronk bowled well before Sam Milliken Smith and Henry Cronk (on debut) bowled excellent spells at the heart of the innings. The fielding was keen with some good catches by Nick Owen in the gully, Harrison Ward, the second of three 'keepers (brother Ben having done a commendable 20 overs and Will Owen taking over late in the innings to allow Harrison to bowl at the tail), and Richie.
After an excellent tea, Richie and Nick Owen started with positive intent, Richie hitting the shot of the day through the covers off the back foot. When Nick was bowled, Harrison Ward continued the positive approach and the team was well up with the run rate before Harrison and Richie fell in the space of a few balls, with Henry Cronk then smashing a short delivery to a very surprised regular mid-wicket who held onto the catch.
Will Owen and Oliver Cronk then put together a very mature 50 partnership, defending the good ball and despatching the loose delivery. Both batted extremely well and made well deserved 36 and 35 respectively.
When Oliver was caught, Sam Milliken Smith continued the run chase with Will and the target was 70 off 12 overs before Leatherhead brought back their opening bowler who kept good line and length to restrict the scoring opportunities and eventually get one through Will's otherwise immaculate defence. Rob Ward joined Sam but the target was now out slipping of reach and an honourable draw the result.
Very good performances from all of the younger players bodes well for the future of Brook Sunday cricket!
