Well done Hywel

At the club house last saturday members congratulated our man in the middle, Hywel Williams after he was recognised by the Edinburgh referee society for his 29 years of referring service and contributions to rugby receiving their lifetime achievement trophy.

For those that aren't familiar with Hywels story he was previously a proud player with the Edinburgh Borderers team that played in the capital for many years from 1921 - 1972 until they stopped playing regularly due to declining numbers. In 1972 following their final match against Broughton he and six others paid there membership and became members of BRFP and continued to play until he was 45yrs old.

Once his playing days were over he wanted to continue to be involved in rugby and began to referee braving both scottish weather and vocal sidelines to make sure rugby could happen for the next generation. It is a mark of the man that after a short retirement from being a ref he came out of retirement due to a shortage of refs locally.

On behalf of the rugby club we are pleased to see Hywel getting recognised for his hard work and hope he can continue to whistle for many years to come
