PETERSON HAT-TRICK SHOOTS DOWN LINNETS

Burscough followed up Saturday’s terrific FA Cup victory with an away defeat on Bank Holiday Monday, when they were shot down by a hat-trick from Ormskirk based striker Tom Peterson, Burscough losing their striker Chad Whyte to injury during the first-half, their talisman requiring seven stitches in a knee injury.

Burscough fielding the same starting eleven who had done so well against Northwich Victoria had started well against the Championship chasing side and might well have taken the lead early on when Matt Ward was put through on goal, however his attempt was charged down by the COL goalkeeper who was to have a very good game, this was followed by a Whyte header that went inches wide of the post.

The Linnets had arguably been the better team for twenty minute but that changed bang on the twentieth minute, a poor headed response to a long ball from COL put the ball perfectly for Peterson who with time and space picked his spot to make it 1-0 to COL.

Two minutes later Burscough had a mountain to climb, a header from a corner hit the crossbar and in true goal poachers fashion Peterson got the second from about two yards out.

The loss of Whyte after a collision with the goalkeeper just before half-time, was a blow for Burscough and after 49 minutes it was effectively all over, and intricate passing move typical of the good footballing side COL are, put the ball to Peterson around the penalty spot and he put the ball wide of Linnets goalkeeper Lee Robinson and into the net to make it three.

Burscough fought on and given luck could easily have pulled a goal or two back, especially when a Ward header was only kept by a fine save, although COL were the better side Burscough can at least take credit for pushing the hosts back for good periods in what was an excellent spectacle from two enterprising teams.
