The defeat, Carlton’s first at Coles Lane against the Roms, was Carlton’s third in a week and having failed to get a shot on target in the entire game, the Millers could have no complaints.
Les McJannet made four changes from the side beaten at home by Coalville with Kallum Keane, Matt Baker, Danny Elliott and Joe Brothwell all returning in place of Martin Ball, Ben Flynn, Billy Bennett and Jordan Vilums.
Prior to the game there was an impeccably observed one minute’s silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives at Hillsborough 25 years ago.
Once the game got underway, in bright sunshine, there was the feel of a pre-season friendly as neither side showed a great deal of urgency with neither promotion nor relegation an issue.
Danny O’Callaghan had a chance on 26 minutes as he stole away on the right hand side but then fell over, summing up the opening half of the game.
Aaron Hooton picked up an injury and was replaced by Flynn shortly after the half hour, before O’Callaghan headed over from a Thomas Turton corner.
Carlton’s first threat came just before half time. Lee Torr went on a fine run, and when he played the ball to Flynn the wide man delivered an excellent cross which was palmed away by Paul Evans but no one was in position to pounce on the loose ball.
Romulus began the second half looking the more determined and Kameron Campbell did well to clear an effort by Greg Downes.
Marcus Brown then went clean through on goal but shot wide, before the home side took the lead on 65 minutes. Downes ran onto a through ball and calmly stroked home past Jonathon Viscosi.
Brothwell went through into the penalty area on 73 minutes and looked to be fouled by Rob Evans but the striker stayed on his feet and his effort was blocked.
That was a rare effort for the Millers and the only other half chance came in injury time, when Brothwell and Jordan Vilums both saw efforts blocked before they got anywhere near the goal as Romulus saw the game out.
Carlton Town: Viscosi; Campbell, Torr, Baker, Thornton; Elliott, Troke (Ball 66), Keane (Brindley 66), Brothwell; Munn, Hooton (Flynn 32). Unused substitute: Vilums.
