Chew still in the hunt for third palce despite a reverse against the Cranes

By Andrew Tanner

A Sparkes Brown try secures a losing bonus point which could prove vital in the race for third place in Somerset premier.

Chew Valley 14 Stothert & Pitt 18

Chew Valley snatched a losing bonus point with the last play of the game with a try from Luke Sparkes Brown in a turgid game that was dominanted by forward exchanges despite perfect underfoot conditions. Stotherts persisted with using their big men tight to the breakdown not trusting the ball to go wide and ulimately that limited ploy proved successful with tries from forwards Andy Croker, Liam Rotherham. Lewis White added two penalties and a conversion. Chew Valley trailled by 8 points to nil into the wind but struck back two minutes after half time with a catch and drive from a lineout which saw Loose head prop Will Keel scoring a try with Alex Cameron converting. When the Chew backs saw the ball they looked dangerous with Jack Evans on the wing always a threat but mistakes at crucial times let the Cranes off the hook and when replacement second row veteran Bruce Wellman saw yellow for "agressive rucking" having only been on for 8 minutes with half an hour to go, the visitors had no need to add any width to their game. Sparkes Brown crossed after the defence had conceded a number of penalties close in and Cameron converted. That score could make the difference to who finishes in third in the league with Stotherts having to face Midsomer Norton away in their last game and Chew Valley away to Gordano before completing their campaign against Imperial

Where next?

Chew fail to convert pressure into points at Wells Chew Valey came to rue 20 minutes pressure without a score up the hill in the first half at Wells as the hosts came back with Arron Cook ascendant.
