Chiefs overpower Hungerford with fine all round display of rugby

By

Slippery conditions doesn't stop Chippenham from producing another fine all round display.

With the usual match reporter away on other duties and a few players unavailable or recovering from small injuries it was a potentially disjointed Chippenham team that took to the field. Having the pleasure of playing on pitch 1 the Chiefs started really well, kicking off to the visiting team, Chippenham put in a fantastic defensive set forcing a mistake from the Hungerford attack. From the turn over Chippenham took control of the ball and went through the phases showing good support and continuity resulting in Ollie A scoring from a pick and go close to the line. The second try was a debut try for Chippenham's new player, Jamie W picked up the ball in midfield and showed excellent pace to blitz over in the corner. Chippenham's 3rd followed straight from the restart, a short kick by Pete C was collected by Tom T who showed his outstanding pace and elusive running skills to score in the corner. The rest of the half followed a similar pattern, with Chippenham being clinical in attack and resolute in defence. Simon I scored his first try for the Chiefs, taking a short and direct line following good hands from Callum B. Callum J grabbed the next one with a good run from the base of a ruck. Tom T scored his second of the match beating two covering defenders with good footwork. Not to be outdone by Tom T, Jamie W grabbed his second of the day taking the ball from the scrum half and waltzing through the defence to score.
At half time it was decided between the coaches to try and even things up a bit by giving the bruised Hungerford team some of the Chippenham players that were training, a big thank you to, Ollie A, Callum A, Fin F and Alex H for playing for Hungerford. With these changes the second half proved to be much more of a contest with neither team able to cross the try line for the first 15 minutes. Eventually Jack G found some space supporting Will C on a break to squeeze over in the corner. When Hungerford did look dangerous Bossman, who according to onlookers, was having the game of his life, put in a hit that even Sam Underhill would have been proud of. Hungerford did eventually find a gap in the Chippenham defence and Callum A scored under the posts. The final word, however, went to the chiefs and in particular Callum J who raced the length of the field to complete the scoring. Even though the scoring was complete there was still time for Joe L to put in a tackle to challenge Bossman for tackle of the day.
A big thank you to the referee who stepped in due to the usual ref being on a course to actually learn how to do it properly, it has been reported that it was a masterclass in refereeing and the normal ref may struggle to get his place back. Another thank you to Jack S for stepping into his Dads shoes to enable the match report to be written, I know how much you all look forward to reading the literacy masterpiece every Sunday evening.
Another big match awaits next Sunday with Stow at home, training on Friday.
